This winter has really shown its full glory this year with snow piling up so thick that the yards and streets turned into scenes straight out of a storybook. Fluffy white flakes kept twirling through the air, gently blanketing rooftops and pavements, while the sharp frost left the air feeling crisp and clear in a way that made everything seem sharper somehow.
Inside our flat with Henry the atmosphere felt entirely different, all warm and settled. Beyond the large window that snowy display kept unfolding, yet with the glass sealed tight it stayed snug and still in here. The table lamp cast a gentle dim glow that formed a soft circle of light, pushing back the winter chill from the corners.
Last evening Henry and I curled up on the sofa together wrapped in a soft throw. Some light family comedy played on the television, nothing with much depth to it, just the sort of thing to chuckle over and unwind with. I kept my eyes on the screen, smiling faintly now and then at thoughts of my own. Henry sat beside me leaning back relaxed and watching along, though his attention kept drifting to the snow drifting down outside. The sight really was stunning.
The calm got broken by that familiar ringtone from Henry’s phone. He didn’t reach for it straight away as if reluctant to cut into our quiet time together but the ringing came again. With a small sigh he pulled the smartphone from his pocket glanced at the display and sighed once more.
“It’s Daniel again,” he said turning toward me. “Third time this evening already.”
I tilted my head his way a little but stayed focused on the television.
“Probably ringing to invite us over once more,” I answered calmly. “He bought that cottage and wants to mark the occasion. For some reason the man just cannot accept a simple no.”
Henry ran his finger across the screen to take the call.
“Hi Dan, hello,” he said making an effort to keep his tone upbeat.
“Henry! So when are you finally heading over?” Daniel’s voice came through brimming with enthusiasm. “I mentioned it before we are celebrating the purchase! All set the hot tub is warmed up the table is laid friends are gathering. Enough staying in eh? Bring Emily along it will be a good time!”
Henry went quiet for a moment mulling over what to say. He looked across at me and I gave the slightest shake of my head without a word. He understood the signal at once though noisy gatherings loud music endless talk and all the bustle none of it matched what we had in mind for these days off. We both craved a peaceful stretch in our own little corner where we could move at our own pace without needing to explain ourselves to anyone.
Henry waited a beat longer before replying. An idea occurred to him and he put it to use right then.
“Listen,” he began softly. “Here’s the thing Emily has gone to her mum’s for a couple of days. I don’t fancy going on my own you understand. Plus I wouldn’t want anyone saying the wrong thing to her I don’t want to fall out with my wife over nothing. We will get together some other time but later.”
A brief silence followed on the other end then Daniel replied sounding plainly surprised.
“Gone to her mum’s? When does she get back?”
“Tomorrow evening,” Henry said with a hint of wistfulness. “She decided so suddenly and we had all these plans lined up! Meant to catch a film stroll through the park while the weather holds maybe even drop by the ice rink. But it fell through. So another time then all right?”
Daniel stayed quiet briefly as if turning it over then his voice took on an oddly satisfied note.
“All right then but do let me know once she is back. I really do want to see you both!”
“Of course,” Henry agreed at once. “As soon as there is a chance I will drop you a line. Perhaps next weekend if nothing shifts of course.”
He said his goodbyes set the phone down on the small table between the chairs and let out a relieved breath. A small smile crept across his face without him trying.
“Phew I just about talked my way out of it,” he muttered turning back to me. “Why does he have to be so insistent? I made it plain enough I didn’t want to head to his cottage! What would we even do there watch them all get drunk? Daniel never seems to know another way to unwind! Never mind let’s put it aside. I far prefer time just with you.”
He drew me close and I felt the strain from those last minutes easing away. The flat remained warm and hushed snowflakes still turning slowly beyond the glass while the film carried on across the screen slow and comforting nothing like the rowdy parties Henry had no time for.
I nestled against him taking in the steady warmth of his body and the even rhythm of his breathing. The room kept its familiar ease the lamp’s soft light the unhurried film on the screen the quiet tick of the clock on the wall. All of it wrapped around us with that sense of shelter and stillness we so often missed amid everyday rush.
“Me too,” I said quietly lifting my head enough to meet his eyes. “Let’s just watch the film and turn in. Nothing more needed.”
Henry smiled holding me firmer by the shoulders. He was already picturing how in a few hours we would switch off the lights tuck under a warm blanket and drift off to the far off rush of the snowstorm outside. Yet our plans got cut short by yet another call and from the same caller no less.
Henry frowned shot a brief glance at the screen and reached for the phone without much enthusiasm. What now?
“Dan I already said” he started aiming for calm though strain edged into his tone.
“Henry,” Daniel’s voice came through unusually grave even strained. “I am at the Crystal Club right now we decided to have some lively fun with the lads before heading to the cottage. And here is Emily with some bloke. They are having drinks she is hugging him. I did not want to step in but you ought to know. She told you she went to her mum’s so she must have lied outright!”
Henry went still. He glanced at me with surprise then shifted his look to the screen wondering whether his friend was having him on.
“What?” Henry asked doubt plain in his voice. “Are you certain? Perhaps you mixed her up with someone else? I can say for sure I know precisely where my wife is!”
“Absolutely,” Daniel answered with no give in his tone. “She is already drunk laughing loudly. The whole thing looks not very proper if I am honest. And she is not even bothered by me being there! She just waves me off! Want me to pass her the phone?”
Henry shut his eyes briefly trying to order his thoughts. Questions tumbled through his mind yet none came with answers. What was truly happening? How could his friend be so mistaken? Or was something else at play?
“Go on,” he said shortly switching to speaker. He even felt curious what would come through now.
Muffled bass from club music filtered through mixed with bursts of laughter and blurred voices. Then a woman’s voice cut through the noise so close to mine that Henry’s heart gave a jolt.
“Hello? Who is this?” it came with a small pause as if the person on the other side took a moment to realise they were answering.
Henry swallowed working to ease the sudden dryness in his throat. He looked over at me sitting there eyes wide clearly at a loss.
“Emily?” he said keeping his voice level. “It is Henry. What is going on?”
A short laugh answered then the same voice now more bold with a faint rasp replied.
“Oh Henry you are wearing me out! I want to unwind you know? I am fed up with your dull life. I am going to let loose until I have had enough!”
I shot up from the sofa my face draining of colour. I pressed a hand to my chest as though to steady my quickening heartbeat and whispered almost too softly to hear.
“What rubbish! How could he mistake me for someone else? And how does that girl even know your name? What is happening at all?”
“And where are you?”
“What business is it of yours?” the voice in the speaker shot back with a challenging edge. “Even if I am your wife I do not have to answer to you. And I do what I please!”
Laughter and the clink of glasses sounded again in the background then Daniel broke in.
“Henry did you hear? I told you”
Henry cut him off sharply feeling anger confusion and an odd almost childish urge to look away from it all swirling together inside.
“Stop,” he said firmly though a shake still showed in his voice. “I will sort this tomorrow. Do not ring again.”
Henry ended the call at once tossed the phone farther along the sofa and stared up at the ceiling in total bewilderment. If I had not been right there beside him he might have actually believed it.
I dropped back onto the sofa and stared at him puzzled. That girl’s voice really did sound like mine! Yet that was not what mattered most right then! What mattered was how she knew enough details to pull off the act. She must have been coached on it!
“Well this is a turn,” I whispered my voice coming out a touch tight. “Who was that? What sort of circus?”
Henry shook his head thoughtfully running a hand through his hair leaving it more tousled than before. He had no reply only suspicions. Quite troubling ones.
“I have no clue,” he answered gazing off to one side as if an answer might be waiting there. “But the voice it is identical. Even the way of speaking the laugh everything lined up. This cannot be mere chance.”
“And Daniel sounded so sure as if it really was me,” I said with a faint tremor. “Just think if I truly had not been here. You would have believed I was there in the club with some man.”
Henry turned toward me his look growing gentler. He reached out carefully slipping an arm around my shoulders drawing me nearer. My body shook a little and he sensed how vital it felt to stay close now to offer that steadiness.
“I would have suspected something all the same,” he said with certainty. “You would never act that way! I know you. I know how you view such matters. This is all some absurd mix up a joke I do not know. But I will get to the bottom of it! If needed I will ring the club and ask for the footage. We will see who that girl really was.”
I leaned into him feeling the cold that had gripped me start to lift replaced by warmth not just from the room but from within. I drew a slow breath trying to steady myself.
“Yes,” I agreed raising my head a fraction. “It is certainly not me. But who then? And for what reason?”
Henry lifted his shoulders yet the uncertainty had left his eyes now showing resolve to untangle this odd tale. He gripped my hand more firmly as if to show we were in this together and would manage whatever came.
The next day nearer midday I sat in the kitchen sipping tea and scrolling through work messages on my laptop. The quiet broke with a ring Daniel’s name lighting up the screen. I paused before answering after the night before it was hard to ready myself for speaking with him. Still curiosity won out I wanted to learn what he would say.
“Hi,” Daniel started carefully as though treading carefully. “Did you speak with Henry after yesterday?”
I tightened my hold on the phone. I chose to use the moment and clear things up find out precisely what Daniel had seen and why he had spoken about me with such assurance the night before. After a brief pause as if picking my words I replied.
“Yes. We argued. He accused me of something unclear and would not listen to any explanations. He says I lied to him.”
Silence held on the line for a moment. I heard Daniel breathe out heavily then a thread of satisfaction crept into his voice barely there yet unmistakable.
“Is that right,” he said drawing it out. “Well you know I always said Henry does not value you. He never grasped what you are really like.”
I felt heat rising inside yet I kept my tone measured. It mattered to hear him out fully to see where he was leading.
“What do you mean?” I asked aiming to sound steady.
Daniel spoke lower almost whispering and something unsettling lay in that forced closeness of his tone.
“About how you deserve better! Emily I have wanted to say this for ages I love you. Truly. And I am ready to look after you. If you want to leave Henry I will be there. Always.”
I stayed quiet trying to take in what he had said. Thoughts crowded my mind how long had Daniel been holding this? Why speak now after all that strange business? Or had he arranged the whole thing knowing I supposedly was not home.
I breathed deeply pulling my thoughts together and answered calmly yet firmly.
“Daniel this is very unexpected. And honestly not appropriate. I love Henry and we will work through what happened. No need to get involved.”
“Sorry if I said something out of line,” he said at last and the sureness had gone from his voice. “I simply wanted you to know you have someone to turn to. Henry acted badly accusing you of everything. I caught a bit from him it seems he just wants to drop you so he is hunting for an excuse! I only want you to be all right!”
I clutched the phone until my fingers paled a little. I inhaled slowly working to hold my composure not let feelings take charge. The last thing I needed was to lose it and shout at this so called friend.
“You know Daniel,” my voice turned cold and flat with no waver at all. “First I was home yesterday. Second Henry and I did not argue. And third I know full well you arranged the whole thing. I just could not see why before. Now it is plain.”
A pause stretched on the line. I could almost feel Daniel scrambling for words hunting for a way to dodge the direct question.
“What?” he finally got out and bewilderment showed. Yet a second later he steadied himself speaking more solidly. “What are you on about?”
“Exactly that. You found a girl with a voice like mine. You asked her to stage this act call speak as me pretend I was in the club with some man. Because you wanted to drive us apart. Admit it is that not so?”
Quiet settled on the line. I waited without hurry knowing the moment would decide it either Daniel would keep lying or come clean.
At last Daniel let out a sharp breath. His voice cracked growing louder almost frantic.
“Yes I arranged it! Because I love you Emily! Because I see how Henry treats you. Because I want you to be happy with me!”
I closed my eyes briefly. A rush of bitterness rose yet I kept it from my voice.
“Happy?” I gave a bitter laugh though it came out flat without any joy. “Why did you decide I would be happy with you? Who are you even? Just a regular man who swaps girls like gloves. Even if you were the only person left I would not spare you a glance understand?”
Daniel went quiet a moment as if sorting his thoughts then spoke softly almost murmuring as though he hardly believed his own words.
“I thought if you argued you would see he does not deserve you. That you would notice me! I am far better than Henry! And about the girls I was only trying to forget you! But no one matches you you know! I would carry you everywhere spoil you adore you just pick me!”
Anger stirred inside me not sudden and hot but steady and firm. I gripped the phone yet kept my voice even nearly detached.
“You? Truly? Never! You betrayed a friend betrayed trust. And for what? For your own fantasies?”
I spoke without heat yet each word landed like a final word clear and sure. No rage or outburst just steady belief I was right.
“Emily sorry” Daniel’s voice wavered. No force or confidence remained only confusion and regret.
Yet I had already chosen. I would not offer him room to defend or explain.
“No Daniel. There will be no forgiveness. And no friendship. Do not call me again ever! And forget Henry’s number as well I will make sure he hears this conversation recorded!”
I ended the call and set the phone down slowly on the table. My fingers shook a touch but I steadied myself with a deep breath and glanced toward the window. Snow still fell quietly beyond the glass as if nothing at all had changed.
Just then Henry came into the room. He spotted my serious expression at once and grew watchful.
“So?” he asked pausing in the doorway. Worry showed in his voice though he tried to sound steady.
I turned to him with a bitter smile and said.
“It all became clear,” I sighed. “He set it up. He admitted he loves me and wanted us to argue. He promised the world can you imagine? What a low thing to do.”
Henry sat beside me on the sofa and took my hand gently. His fingers pressed my palm firmly enough that I felt the support. In that simple hold was everything he meant to convey I am here I am with you and your feelings matter.
“So he was never a true friend,” Henry said quietly. “Put him out of mind! We do not need to waste energy dwelling on it. To be honest I spotted signs long ago but I had no real proof. I worried it was just my mind playing tricks. But now it all fits.”
“Yes,” I agreed shifting nearer and resting my shoulder against his. “But now we know the truth. And we know who we can trust.”
My voice stayed even without any strain. No hurt or bitterness lingered only a quiet relief that matters had finally settled. I closed my eyes briefly breathing in the usual comforting scent of home warm wood fresh tea and the light trace of my favourite perfume.
“You know,” I smiled suddenly and a spark lit my eyes. “Yet this is even for the best. Now we have a firm reason to skip all those parties. You will not fall out with other friends over him will you? We can simply say there is someone at your gathering I would rather not see.”
I said it lightly almost lightly but truth sat behind the words. No more need for polite excuses or weighing if it was worth going or fretting that a no might upset someone. Now it was straightforward there is us our snug world and everything else which no longer counts.
Henry laughed openly without any of the strain that had lingered before.
“Right. We will watch films and have tea,” he agreed tilting his head to catch my eye.
“And stay in,” I added with a small smile tugging the blanket edge toward me and wrapping it around myself like a safe shell.
“Ideal,” he nodded pulling me closer still.
So amid snowflakes turning slowly beyond the window and the soft warm glow from the table lamp our small world felt whole and secure once more. In this room filled with quiet sounds and known scents there was no space for lies doubts or others schemes. Here there were only us two who knew the most vital part was already ours trust warmth and the certainty that tomorrow would bring the same steady cosy day as this one.
After we settled like that I kept turning over what had happened with Daniel. I picture him now alone in his kitchen staring into a cup of long cold tea. He probably does not even recall taking the last sip all his focus swallowed by the words repeating in his head like a stuck record Do not call me. Never.
Rather than remorse or any guilt that might have shown him he had done wrong a heavy dull anger spreads in his chest. It weighs on his ribs makes steady breathing hard forces his fists tight until nails bite into his palms.
Why did everything go so wrong? he might have yelled running a hand hard across the table and brushing away crumbs from the biscuit he had been chewing without thinking.
The scenes from the night before loop in his mind over and over. How he entered the club having planned ahead with Megan a girl he met a couple of weeks back in a cafe. She caught his eye at once the same features similar hair even her voice nearly matched mine. When he explained his plan she simply smiled and nodded Easy. I enjoy games like that.
He likely recalled standing off to the side watching her speak into the phone acting as a drunk loose version of me. She laughed stretched her words on purpose tossed sharp remarks everything just as he had coached. In that moment he felt a thrill almost a rush here it was the key instant If this works he thought Emily will see Henry does not value her. That someone loves her properly.
Yet now he received only a cold refusal and the bitter knowledge the plan collapsed. Worse he lost it all.
It was not me who messed up! he probably argued inwardly pacing the kitchen barely noticing when he knocked into a chair. It is them they do not see they do not grasp! Henry does not deserve her and she trusts him blindly!
He halted at the table gripping the counter edge until his fingers whitened. Memories rushed by how he had watched Henry and me for years. How he envied our ease our way of laughing over small things our warm looks exchanged without even noticing. It seemed to him he could offer me the same only better more genuine stronger. And he took the route he saw as the only one open.
He stepped to the window. Beyond the glass snowflakes turned slowly settling on the sill on bare tree branches. Everything appeared so peaceful so calm.
Why do they have it all while I have nothing? he might have burst out. Why did Henry get her! I am more worthy! I am better at everything!
He knew he had lost not just me but a friend too. Henry who had always been close always ready to help always trusted him. That bond lay broken now and could not be mended. Yet instead of regret he felt only searing irritation a blend of hurt and frustration that burned deep.
The phone rested on the table quiet and distant. He knew he would not call. He would not attempt to explain or plead or beg. That would mark another loss another sign he could not get what he sought. But fresh thoughts were already forming in his mind bitter and sharp.
Let them stay in their snug little world. Let them believe they came out on top. But I know the truth Henry does not value her the way I would. And one day Emily will realise it. Maybe far too late.
He moved to the window gazed at the falling snow and nearly hissed the words barely audible as if fearing someone might overhear.
You think you won Emily? You think it is all settled? But the truth is you simply do not look past your own cosy blanket and cup of tea. You do not notice the person close by who loves you properly. Yet you picked the illusion. Well enjoy it.
He turned sharply from the window spotted a scrap of paper on the table the one where he had jotted the plan for the talk the night before listing the lines Megan should say how to shape the chat. Without pause he snatched it tore it to bits crumpled the pieces and dropped them into the bin. That sorry bit of paper stood for a massive failure.
Snow kept falling beyond the glass cloaking everything in white. He shut his eyes trying to picture me now beside Henry how we might be laughing watching a film drinking tea. How warm and still it must feel for us. How safe we must feel in our small world with no room for lies or tricks.
And instead of any genuine hope for happiness instead of trying to accept what was only one stubborn idea grew in him.
This was meant to be mine. All of this was meant to be mine. This winter has really shown its full glory this year with snow piling up so thick that the yards and streets turned into scenes straight out of a storybook.
