Wait—Don’t Agree Just Yet!

Stopdont say yes.

A boys voice rang out, sharp as a stone tossed through a window.

The village church waited, flawless, sunlight settling gentle as dust.

Do you take

SLAP.

Bare feet slapped against the cold stone floor, the echo rattling between pews.

Every head spun round, startled.

A grubby young boyshivering, barefoot, hair a tangled nestbolted down the aisle.

The bride’s breath caught in her throat.

Vicar someone murmured.

But Daniel didnt move.

He only stared.

The boy halted right in front of him, chest rising and falling fast.

Holding out his hand, he said, My mum told me to… give you this.

He pressed a small silver bracelet into Daniels palm.

Chill.

Weighty.

Daniel looked down, and something inside him nearly broke.

Delicate words engraved:

For my sunshine Daniel.

His hand shook.

No.

It couldnt be.

He hadnt seen that bracelet in years.

Where did you get this? he managed, voice thin.

The boy swallowed hard.

She said… youd know her.

Daniel sank to his knees.

There was a ripple of whispers.

The bride edged away, her dress skimming the old flagstones.

Beth Daniel whispered.

The boys eyes brimmed.

Thats my mum.

A heavy hush crashed down.

Daniel peered closer.

Same eyes.

Same gentle spark.

His voice shivered and cracked.

Where is she?

The boy parted his lips

Only a tremble, no sound.

Daniel moved closer, urgency in every line of his body.

Please. Tell me.

The boy glanced at the bride, then back to Daniel.

Shes outside.

Every face in the church froze.

Daniel stood, nearly knocking the pew.

The bride snatched at his arm.

Daniel dont.

He turned toward her, her fingers desperate on his sleeve.

Her face blanched, lips barely parting.

Not shocked.

Afraid.

You knew, he hissed.

Tears gathered in her lashes.

I was trying to protect you.

Those words struck him harder than anything yet.

Protect me from what?

Just then, the double doors swung open.

A chilly draught swept down the nave.

And she was there

Beth.

Thinner.

Fragile.

Holding herself up, arms hugged round her torso.

Daniels lungs seized, heart hammering ropes through his chest.

Seven years hed locked her memory behind iron doors.

Her laugh.

Her touch.

Her leaving.

Hed told himself shed chosen to go.

If only you knew what happened then.

Daniel stared at her, the whole world cracking wide.

For a moment the church didnt exist.

No guests.

No bell music.

No wedding.

Just Beth, standing in the pewter-grey light of the open doorway.

Alive.

Actually alive.

His body shook with every breath.

Beth

She started sobbing, just hearing her name in his voice.

Not rage.

Not blame.

Recognition.

Love turned fierce and lost.

The boy slid away from Daniel, moving towards his mother as if it was all hed ever done.

The brides hand loosened from Daniels suit sleeve.

Every person in those wooden pews finally understood

They werent witness to a wedding.

They were watching a deception come undone.

Daniel stumbled forward.

Step by step.

You died.

His words toppled out bent and battered.

I buried you.

Beth recoiled as if it was a blow.

No, she murmured. You buried what everyone told you.

Daniels gaze snapped to the bride.

To Claire.

Standing pale and brittle, hands trembling at her bouquet.

Their friends eyes gravitated to her, wild and questioning.

The vicars Bible drooped at his side.

Daniels thoughts stormed, thunderouscold and dangerous realisation gathered fast.

You knew she was alive.

Claire shook her head, panic wide in her eyes.

It wasnt

You knew.

He barked the words, voice torn to ribbons.

The boy gripped Beths hand tight.

Beths chin trembled.

She came to see me.

The statement dropped like a tombstone.

Claires eyelids sealed.

A solitary tear traced her cheek.

He stared at her, disbelief gouging him.

When?

Claire fought to get the words out.

After the crash.

Daniel stood stock-still, swallowing ice.

Seven years past.

Endless rain.

A crumpled car.

The glare of hospital lights.

A body, the nurses whispered, too broken to say goodbye.

He remembered signing forms with his name barely legible.

Claire propping him up as he shattered.

Over and over, shed said:

Shes gone.
You need to let go.

Beth moved inside now, slow and wraith-like.

So thin.

So breakable.

So very real.

They told me you wanted nothing more to do with me.

Daniel stared, drained of all colour.

What?

The boy looked up at him, scared but determined.

Beths voice shook harder.

They said you’d moved on. That you paid for help but never came.

Claire started crying properly then.

I was trying to save you!

Daniel spun toward her, anger and agony melding.

Save me from WHAT?

This time, Claire shattered.

From her being ill! she cried.

The church gasped.

Beths eyes dropped away.

Daniel watched her, jaw tight.

Claire was trembling from inside out.

She was dying, Daniel! They told me she wouldn’t recover, ever. She needed surgeons, endless care

You let me believe shed died.

You were already lost!

The words hung, echoing in the bones of the church.

Claire moved towards him, pleading.

You stopped eating. You didnt sleep. You talked to people who werent there. She swallowed. If youd seen her like that

Her voice broke to pieces.

youd have ruined yourself trying to save her.

Daniel felt hollow, scraped clean.

No longer angry.

Just undone.

He faced Beth again.

You thought Id deserted you?

She nodded, sob stifled, eyes bright with sorrow.

For years.

The boy fished in his pocket, then produced something folded small and careful.

A photograph. Faded, edges curledpassed from hand to hand a thousand times.

He gave it to Daniel.

Daniels heart stopped.

A younger Daniel, slumped in sleep on an uncomfortable chair beside the hospital bed. His hand wrapped round Beths.

On the back was a date.

Three days after the crash.

Beths voice was little more than a whisper.

I kept it because I didnt understand how someone who looked at me like that

She clung to the sentence.

could just go.

Daniels legs gave way.

He crumpled on the steps before the altar.

A rustle of fear whipped through the crowd.

The bracelet tumbled to the stones with a metallic tap.

The boy recoiled, frightened, but Beth darted forward.

She dropped beside Daniel, taking his battered hands in hers.

And when he felt her again, after all those years

He broke.

Openly.

Unashamed.

The kind of sorrow that floods out the dam.

Claire stood alone at the front as the silence thickened.

Daniel gripped Beths hands like she might vanish at a moments notice.

At last, he glanced up at the boy.

Frozen in light, familiar and strange all at once.

Same eyes.

Same smile, fighting tears.

Daniels voice shattered as he managed,

Hes mine, isnt he?

Now, years later, writing this, I understandlies, even told for love, build walls around everyones heart. Its the truth, however painful, that lets broken things finally heal.
