The golden glow of a setting sun bathed London’s lively Hyde Park in a warm, almost magical brilliance.

The gentle gold of a waning sunset washed over Londons famous Hyde Park, lending the place the sort of magical glow even the rain couldnt quite spoil. Footsteps echoed on the winding paths as commuters scurried along, utterly unaware that their usually dull Thursday evening was about to be spiced up considerably.

Right at the centre of it all sat a modest little sandwich stall decorated with a cheerfully stripy awning that flapped in the breeze. Behind the counter, a young woman with flour-smudged fingers methodically wrapped up her latest order. Her understated look made her practically invisible to the masses around her.

Then, out of nowhere, he arrived.

A young man in an impeccably tailored suit came pelting down the path, tie askew, cheeks flushed with purpose. He dropped to one knee in front of heron the wet pavement no lessunbothered by the immediate outbreak of excited whispers from passing Londoners.

Will you marry me? he blurted, his voice wobbling between confidence and terror. I dont give a toss about my family, the old money, or keeping up appearances. I want you. Only you.

Everything ground to a halt. Strangers choked on their cappuccinos. Smartphones were whipped out with Olympic-level speed, aimed and filming within seconds.

She froze, blue eyes wide as saucers, heat rising to her cheeks. She didnt manage so much as a single syllable

When suddenly, screeching brakes split the moment.

A glossy black Bentley screeched to the curb. Out stepped a woman straight from the pages of Tatlerice-blonde, pin-sharp in a Savile Row suit, diamonds throwing the sunset around like a disco ball, her expression set to do not approach.

His mother.

This is finished, she pronounced, her cut-glass accent slicing through the crowd. Look at her! A sandwich seller? Youre throwing away everythingour family name, our heritagefor this?

The audience of random park-goers buzzed, pausing in munching on their Pret baguettes to get a better look. The young man snarled as he got back on his feet, hands bunched into fists.

Mum, thats enough! You dont know her at all. You never even tried.

She didnt look at him. Instead, her arctic gaze pinned the girl by the sandwich cart, oozing pure British upper-class disdain.

Tension sparkled in the air, thick as London fog.

Then the young woman stepped forward.

Unflappable. Poised. Slightly mysterious.

A slow, cheeky smile spread across her lips as she met the mothers stare.

Actually, she said quietly, her words somehow carrying over the crowd, I was testing your son.

Murmurs swept through the onlookers. The mothers perfectly arched eyebrow shot up in an Olympic-calibre display of scepticism.

With a flourish, the girl reached into her apron, fetched out a sleek phone, and pressed a single button.

Thats it, shows over, she announced into the receiver, her tone quietly commanding. You can reveal yourselves.

In a heartbeat, the entire atmosphere changed.

A troop of well-groomed professionals appeared from a path nearbysecurity men, personal assistants, and a dapper older gentleman with a leather briefcase in hand. Professional cameras emerged from their camouflage in the trees and benches. Even the sandwich stall glowed briefly, flickering to reveal top-range film kit underneath.

The young woman untied her apron and shrugged it off, revealing an elegant silk blouse. Suddenly, she could never have passed for a sandwich seller. Not in a million years.

She turned to the mother and gave her an impeccably polite smile, edged with steel.

Im Charlotte Fairchildheiress to Fairchild Holdings. Weve simply been watching to see how your son behaves when he thinks theres no one of consequence watching. Loyalty, courage, decencyor the lack thereof. She glanced at the young man, who by now looked as if hed been mugged by the entire cast of Downton Abbey. Good news. He passed.

The colour drained from the mothers face, all the way to her designer shoes.

Charlotte continued, smooth as clotted cream, As for the proposalthat part is absolutely real. But I had to know if hed pick me even when I had nothing. It seems he would. She turned back to the young man, eyes softening. Now I can trust youwith everything. Especially my heart.

She took his hand, and the crowd let loose a very English round of applause and delighted whoops.

As the last streaks of sunset painted the sky blush pink and marmalade, Charlotte leaned in and whispered to the still-stunned young man:

So, about that proposal of yours. My answer is yes.

The mother simply stared, speechless beside her sparkling Bentley, as her carefully curated house of cards quietly collapsedtoppled by a love that was far beyond her control.
