Nobody Ever Thought Things Could Possibly Go Wrong

Nobody saw anything out of the ordinary coming.
It was simply another county fair, another equestrian showuntil a young lad crossed the barrier.
At first, it just seemed like a slip, a misjudged stride.
But then it didnt.
He strode straight onto the green, alone.
Oi! Whats that boy think hes doing?!
A ripple of unease ran through the crowd.
He tripped, dusted off his knees
And never once glanced behind him.
For the bull already had its gaze fixed on him.
Still. Intent.
The very air seemed to quiver, heavy and thick.
The boy took another step forward.
Much too close, now.
Somebody, get him out!
Yet not a soul acted in time.
Because it didnt quite feel like peril
It felt like something different.
Please look at me, the boy murmured softly.
The bull started moving.
Slow, ponderous steps, each one louder and heavier.
The boy stood his ground, unmoved.
Instead, he reached into his blazer pocket, pulling forth a worn, faded handkerchief.
My dad said youd remember this
The audience hushed
Some elders recognised it instantly, a relic from a forgotten summer.
He loved you more than the world.
The bull halted, right at the boys shoes.
A distant voice cried
Move, son!
But the boy stayed put.
If you still remember him
He gulped.
please, dont leave me alone too.
And then
the bull inched even closer, its breath like steam in the chilly airThe bulls great head bowed, brushing against the cloth in trembling recognition. The boy held his breath as the creature huffed, gentle as dusk. For a heartbeat, time stretched thin
then, the bull dropped to its knees, curling beside the boy in a quiet surrender.
The crowd gasped, then stilled, as if bearing witness to summer long since past.
Shaking, the boy pressed his palm to the broad, warm brow.
You remember, he whispered, tears shining.
The arena, so tense before, became a circle of awe. Child and beast, bound by memory and mercy, stoodtogetherbeneath the wide-eyed sky.
And from that moment on, none who were there ever doubted the old stories again.
